Bowen therapy, developed by Australian Tom Bowen, is a dynamic yet relaxing form of remedial bodywork. It is a technique that works on the connective tissue structures (fascia) of our body.
Bowen therapy uses a sequential series of specifically designated moves at various points on the body, applied either through the clothing or directly on the skin.
This activates and promotes the body’s inner healing abilities to achieve balance and harmony, resulting in a fast and lasting relief from discomfort and pain.
There are no forceful movements and Bowen therapy can be applied as first aid directly after acute injuries are sustained.
Many clients feel an instant relief after an initial Bowen therapy session. However, it is recommended that you have 3-5 treatments, 7-10 days apart to achieve the best results.
Bowen therapy is not only used for human ailments, but is commonly used as a regular treatment for pets, and more specifically for professional race horses.
What can Bowen therapy assist and treat?
I have found that Bowen therapy is extremely effective in treating inflammatory related symptoms, and can often lead to preventing the necessity of cortisone treatment for such conditions. If you have been diagnosed with a condition ending in ‘-itis’ then I highly recommend that you invest in Bowen therapy treatments.
Listed below are some conditions that have responded well to Bowen therapy
- Migraines, neck and head tension
- Back and Shoulder pain
- Sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow
- Postural problems
- Repetitive strain injury
- Sports and accident related injuries, both acute and long term
- Frozen shoulder
- Fibromyalgia
- Tinnitus
- Multiple sclerosis
- Asthma
- Strokes
- Dizziness and balance problems
- Out of character behavioural problems
- Stress disorders, emotional problems
- Sleep disorders, nightmares and bed-wetting
- Organic complaints – digestive, hormonal, respiratory, trauma, both physical and emotional
- Women’s health problems
- General aches and pains
- Acute and chronic fatigue
Bowen therapy works wonderfully combined with other modalities such as Polarity therapy. However, massage is not recommended as this may reduce the effectiveness of Bowen therapy.
